Curly Leaved Pondweed (Potamogenton Crispus)

Habitiat:

Freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and canals. Rooted easily in silt, muck or clay bottoms and sometimes appearing in gravel or sand.

Introduction and Range Withing Canada:

Found all across Southern Ontario, Southern Canadian Shield, Georgian Bay and Severn River areas.

Impacts:

This highly competitive plant, capable of rapid growth forms dense stands which cover and dominate very large areas. Stands easily displace native species, reduce biodiversity, impede water flow and greatly restrict recreational activities such as boating, swimming and fishing. Studies have found it to be a large contributing factor to the alteration of water oxygen levels with negative impacts on fish habitats, cultural eutrophication and algae blooms.
